L'esperienza è stata veramente molto interessante, d'altronde le novità del nuovo sistema operativo di casa Microsoft erano diverse: il nuovo IIS 7.0, la nuova versione del protocollo SMB (SMB 2.0), gli improvement fatti allo stack TCP/IP, la modalità "Server Core", la praticissima interfaccia "Server Manager" etc...
The Experience of testing this new OS has been very interesting, moreover there are several new features: the new IIS 7.0, the new version of SMB protocol (SMB 2.0), improvements done to the TCP/IP stack, the Server Core mode and the practical an captivating Server Manager interface.
In pratica abbiamo effettuato una migrazione graduale di tutte le applicazioni dal "vecchio" server Windows 2003 x64/IIS 6.0 al nuovo server Windows 2008 x64/IIS 7.0 iniziando dalle applicazioni meno critiche e/o scritte in ASP (mobile.sysadmin.it, newsletter.sysadmin.it ...) fino ad arrivare al "core" e alle ultime applicazioni rilasciate che girano con il FrameWork.NET 2.0. e udite,udite senza riscrivere un "bit" delle applicazioni.
We have practically done a gradual migration of all software from "old" Windows 2003 Server x64/II 6.0 to new Windows 2008 x64/IIS 7.0, starting from less critical applications written in AS(mobile.sysadmin.it,newsletter.sysadmin.it...) to the core and to most recent framework 2.0 based applications;incredibly all was done without rewriting a single line of code in any application!
Ma non è filato tutto liscio... qualche problema c'è stato; in pratica a metà migrazione si è verificato un fault-hardware sul nuovissimo server (sabato 19 Gennaio 2008 11:41 AM)
Well, it was not so smooth as it appears...we had some little issues:in the mid of the migration process we had an hardware fault on a brand new server (Saturday 19 January 2008 11:41)
che ci ha costretto al rollback; il tutto comunque è durato un paio di giorni.

Se a primo impatto l'interfaccia grafica stile Visual Studio può lasciare un pò spaesati vi accorgerete poi che in realtà tutto quello che serve è sempre a portata di mano; inoltre alcune delle nuove feature di IIS 7.0 ci hanno aiutato non poco (leggi "Trace Log Files"), il sistema di reportistica è veramente fantastico.
The first impact with the new Visual Studio stylish GUI may leave you a bit puzzled, but soon you realize that all you need is really within reach;besides some of the new features of IIS 7.0 helped a lot (read 'Trace Log Files') and the reporting system is really fantastic.

Inoltre la modularità di IIS 7.0 (molto più granulare) permette di installare eventuali hotfix solo per i moduli presenti, quindi un numero di hotfix solitamente inferiore rispetto a prima.
Futher more the modularity of IIS 7.0 (much more granular then before) makes easy to install hotfixes just for the installed modules in order to drastically reduce the number of hotfixes applied.
Per il resto c'è ancora qualche piccola cosa da "tunare" e lo faremo nei prossimi giorni, ma sin da ora possiamo sicuramente ritenerci soddisfatti anche della velocità che le applicazioni web di SysAdmin.it hanno guadagnato; i dati raccolti anche con Performance Monitor parlano chiaro.
There's still something to tune up and we will do it during next days, but we are fully satisfied even for the speed-up acquired by the web applications of SysAdmin.it:the datas collected by Performance Monitor speak loud and clear.
Inoltre, per non farci mancare nulla, abbiamo installato la versione a 64 bit di Windows 2008 in modo da poter provare poi le prossime beta di Hyper-V :)

Ottima anche l' inziativa ITPro Momentum di Microsoft alla quale SysAdmin.it ha partecipato; d'altronde non si può essere la "prima community di sistemisti MS in Italia" e non essere sempre "up-to-date" per poter meglio condividere informazioni, esperienza e know-how su tutte queste nuove tecnologie!
We fully appreciated the Microsoft's ITPro Momentum event to which SysAdmin.it has partecipated;moreover we can't be the first MS system administrators' community without being always up to date, to better share infos, experiences and know how on all these new technologies.
Vi lasciamo con un dubbio :
E' se tra qualche mese fosse il buon "vecchio" SQL2005 a lasciare il posto a SQL2008 ... ?!? Mah!
